Practice notes
The second of Carl Czerny's 50 Melodic Studies, Op. 840: studies meant to train singing melody as well as fingers. It is in F major (one flat) and a quick 6/8, and lasts under a minute.
How it is built. It starts on a pick-up, C. The right hand's tune skips in eighth notes, returning again and again to C while its top note climbs: F, G, A, then higher. The left hand plays broken chords, a long bass note and two eighths above it. Partway through, the key signature changes to two flats, and a section in B-flat major follows. Many small grace notes ornament the tune.
The tricky parts
- The skipping pattern. The hand swings between the repeated C and the rising top notes. Keep the C light and the tune above it.
- Very high notes. The tune climbs far above the staff. Read up from high C.
- The key change. In the B-flat section every E is flat too.
- Grace notes. Octotune plays them but doesn't wait for them. Add them last.
Practice plan
- Right hand alone in Wait for me, then in Play along at 50% speed.
- Left hand alone, then both hands, with Loop this measure around the key change.
- Play along, raising the speed while it stays graceful.
