In one line
Octotune is a piano app in the web browser that teaches children and grown-ups to read music at the piano. Its catchphrase is "Learn piano together."
In a paragraph
Octotune teaches reading music at the piano, and it is free to start. Grown-ups follow a path of twelve short units, from middle C to both clefs, ledger lines, rhythm, the keys of G and F, chords and sight-reading. Children from 2½ play in a Kids mode that needs no reading at all: pictures, demonstrations and painted notes, with no words to read and no voice. Up to six players in a family can share it, each with their own progress. It works with a MIDI keyboard, the computer keyboard or the keys on the screen, and it has 124 songs and pieces to learn, all public domain or openly licensed, with sheet music and falling notes. It runs in the browser at octotune.com; an app for iPhone and iPad is being tested.
The name
Octotune, one word, with a capital O. An octopus has eight arms, an octave has eight notes, and Octotune has eight instruments to play. The octopus is called Octo.
The promise
No ads. No analytics. Children are never asked for anything.
Children never sign in and are never asked for a name, an email or anything else. Signing in is optional and for grown-ups only, and progress stays on the device unless a grown-up chooses to keep a copy in their account. The privacy page has the details.
